SARAH WHEELER: Out of the Woodwork (Poncho Records)

Something of a genre about-face for Vancouver artist Wheeler, the dozen tracks here are decidedly rootsier and less on the pop/rock face of things than her earlier albums. Working mostly with producer David Gannett and playing almost everything on her own, she gets good Lucinda Williams-esque steam chugging along on tracks such as the strong “Stars in the Sky” or the poop-kicking “Big Time.” It is this latter track that showcases a writer who can move from country to the more chilled dreamy pop that I would have liked to hear more of on the disc. However, start to finish, this is a very solid effort from an artist who has always had it but really tapped the right points and doesn’t miss here. Her voice really hits some intriguing melody and harmony hooks along the way, expecially on the atmospheric “Hummingbird.”
